Identify students who may need support early

In secondary schools, one teacher commonly guides several dozen students. People are complex, and students at this stage are especially sensitive and change rapidly from day to day. Managing such a complex classroom is demanding. Ideally, a teacher would give equal attention to every student. In practice, however, a teacher’s impressions range from students who cause concern to those who seem able to manage with little intervention. An important part of the teacher’s role is to identify students who may need attention early within the limited time of a school year and offer appropriate support.

See students from several perspectives with the “UK eye”

Daily observation is the richest and most important source of information for understanding students. Teachers are human, however, and their observations can sometimes become biased. Information seen through “eyes” other than their own can then be helpful. These “eyes” include other teachers and students, as well as objective data such as test results and students’ participation in extracurricular activities. The Uchida-Kraepelin Test, also called the UK Test, provides one such objective perspective. Combining teachers’ observations with the test data—the “UK eye”—can give a more rounded understanding of individual students and the class.

Create opportunities for students to understand themselves

The Uchida-Kraepelin Test has another important educational use beyond providing information for teachers’ assessment of students and classes: it can encourage students to ask themselves, “Who am I?” Looking at their own judgment results can prompt students to consider, “What characteristics do I have?” Secondary-school students are still exploring their identity. Test results can be one starting point for thinking about their behavioral traits. Students need not force themselves to accept the results; considering carefully what fits them and what does not can help them develop self-understanding. Reflecting on their own way of working also connects naturally with career education.
