Why the Uchida-Kraepelin Test Practice Section Must Not Be Skipped

Users of the Uchida-Kraepelin Test often ask, ‘We are short of time and the task is simple. Can we skip the practice section?’ The answer is no: it must not be skipped.

The test sheet includes practice exercises labeled ‘レンシュウ’ on the Japanese version and ‘Drill Section’ on the English version. These exercises are completed during the instructions before the main test.

Practice is very important because, as well as teaching the procedure, it serves as a warm-up. Skipping it can substantially affect the beginning of the main test. Even if examinees already know the procedure well, never omit the practice section.

As for practice intended to raise work volume rather than to warm up, a little mental exercise each day can help people become more familiar with numbers and increase work volume to some extent, though not dramatically. Extra practice immediately before the test, however, may cause fatigue that outweighs any benefit and can be counterproductive.
