The Uchida-Kraepelin Test belongs to a category of psychological tests known as performance tests. Test takers perform continuous addition, repeatedly adding pairs of single-digit numbers.
For example, when 3 and 8 appear next to each other, 3+8=11, so the rule is to write only the units digit, 1. Writing another digit and leaving it uncorrected is counted as an incorrect answer.
Why ‘leaving it uncorrected’? The test allows a mistake to be crossed out with a diagonal slash ‘／’ and replaced with the correct answer. This rule is explained before the test.
Even if someone writes 2 for 3+8, crossing it out with ‘／’ and writing 1 makes it a correct answer; it is not counted as an error.
In the usual Judgment of the Uchida-Kraepelin Test, incorrect answers in three specified lines are counted.
There are 30 lines in the whole test, so this is a 10% sample. How many errors occur in these three lines?
Statistics from Nisseiken, Inc. give the following picture.
0 errors: approximately 46% of test takers
1 error: approximately 25% of test takers
Together, these already account for more than 70% of test takers.
2 errors: approximately 12% of test takers
3 errors (an average of one per line): approximately 6% of test takers
Together, these account for approximately 90% of test takers.
The author suggests that it seems fair to say ‘people ordinarily make very few mistakes when adding single-digit numbers.’
On that basis, someone making five or ten errors in a single line may be in a state that differs from the usual situation.
Errors are relatively rare, which can make statistical analysis difficult. Nevertheless, the author notes that distinctive features can also emerge in clinical observation of people who make many errors.
- Made a careless mistake without noticing
Errors often appear sporadically and irregularly; feeling rushed seems to be a frequent cause.
- An answer believed to be correct was actually wrong
Occasionally someone fails to recognize an assumption, for example answering 2 every time 8+3 appears. A tendency to persist in the same pattern may be involved.
- Noticed a mistake but did not correct it, or noticed it but could not correct it
Errors often occur one after another, as though the person’s mental brakes are not working effectively. - Had no intention of answering correctly from the start, or stopped caring partway through
This tends to occur when the person is not in a psychological state to engage seriously with the test. - Cannot perform the calculation in the first place
The amount of work is often extremely low. Occasionally, even adults can be seen counting on their fingers.
